OBJECTIVES: To investigate the nutritional status of children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and understand the correlation between malnutrition and clinical characteristics as well as lung function. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on clinical data of CF children admitted from January 2016 to June 2023. Clinical characteristics of CF children with different nutritional statuses were compared, and the correlation between malnutrition and lung function was analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 52 CF children were included, comprising 25 boys (48%) and 27 girls (52%), aged between 7 months and 17 years. Respiratory symptoms were the predominant clinical manifestations (96%, 50/52). The prevalence of malnutrition was 65% (34/52), with moderate/severe malnutrition being the most common (65%, 22/34). The malnutrition group had a longer duration of illness, higher proportion of digestive system symptoms, and lower levels of serum albumin (P<0.05). Pulmonary function parameters, including forced expiratory volume in one second as a percentage of the predicted value, ratio of forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity, forced expiratory flow at 25% of forced vital capacity exhaled, forced expiratory flow at 50% of forced vital capacity exhaled, forced expiratory flow at 75% of forced vital capacity exhaled, and maximum mid-expiratory flow as a percentage of the predicted value, were lower in the malnutrition group compared to the normal nutrition group (P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed body mass index Z-score was positively correlated with the above six pulmonary function parameters (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of malnutrition is high in CF children and is associated with decreased lung function. CF children with higher body mass index have better lung function. Therefore, screening and evaluation of nutritional status as well as appropriate nutritional intervention should be emphasized in CF children.

RESUMEN

Cardio-metabolic diseases, including a cluster of metabolic disorders and their secondary affections on cardiovascular physiology, are gradually brought to the forefront by researchers due to their high prevalence and mortality, as well as an unidentified pathogenesis. tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs), cleaved by several specific enzymes and once considered as some "metabolic junks" in the past, have been proved to possess numerous functions in human bodies. More interestingly, such a potential also seems to influence the progression of cardio-metabolic diseases to some extent. In this review, the biogenesis, classification and mechanisms of tsRNAs will be discussed based on some latest studies, and their relations with several cardio-metabolic diseases will be highlighted in sequence. Lastly, some future prospects, such as their clinical applications as biomarkers and therapeutic targets will also be mentioned, in order to provide researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the research status of tsRNAs as well as its association with cardio-metabolic diseases, thus presenting as a beacon to indicate directions for the next stage of study.

Hemodynamic instability in patients with clozapine intoxication can indirectly reflect the serum concentration of clozapine.We have described a case of a 32-year-old pregnant woman who developed life-threatening clozapine toxicity at 28 weeks of gestation. The levels of clozapine and norclozapine in the serum were high. We initiated hemoperfusion(HP) and other detoxification therapies to remove the drug. The patient had severely dilated peripheral blood vessels, which led to cardiac symptoms such as fatal hypotension and uncontrollable tachycardia, resulting in very high cardiac output and elevated Central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2). Pharmacological intervention significantly improved the hemodynamics.In light of our observations in the ongoing case, we posit that evaluating hemodynamic parameters before and after blood detoxification could serve as a valuable means to gauge effectiveness and provide guidance for treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Fifteen to 25% of patients with colorectal cancer have combined liver metastases at the time of diagnosis, whereas an additional 15 to 25% will develop liver metastases after curative resection of primary colorectal cancer, with the vast majority (80-90%) of liver metastases unresponsive to curative resection at first. Colorectal cancer liver metastasis is also the leading cause of death in patients with colorectal cancer. In recent years, several studies have demonstrated that intestinal flora, especially Fusobacterium nucleatum, plays a crucial role in the development of colorectal cancer liver metastasis, so we hypothesized that long-term metronidazole use could effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative liver metastasis in colorectal cancer patients. METHODS/DESIGN: This study is a prospective, single-centre, randomized, double-blind controlled study in which 300 patients will be randomly assigned to the test group or the control group in a 1:1 allocation ratio. The aim of this trial is to demonstrate that long-term oral antibiotics can effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative liver metastasis in patients with colorectal cancer. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee at the Chinese Ethics Committee of Registering Clinical Trials (ChiECRCT20210229). The results of this study will be disseminated at several research conferences and as published articles in peer-reviewed journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2100046201. Registered on July 05, 2021.

Human cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disorder triggered by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) and predominantly occurred in the liver and lungs. The M2 macrophage level is considerably elevated among the liver of patients with hepatic CE and performs an integral function in liver fibrosis. However, the mechanism of CE inducing polarisation of macrophage to an M2 phenotype is unknown. In this study, macrophage was treated with E. granulosus cyst fluid (EgCF) to explore the mechanism of macrophage polarisation. Consequently, the expression of the M2 macrophage and production of anti-inflammatory cytokines increased after 48 h treatment by EgCF. In addition, EgCF promoted polarisation of macrophage to an M2 phenotype by inhibiting the expression of transcriptional factor hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α), which increased the expression of glycolysis-associated genes, including hexokinase 2 (HK2) and pyruvate kinase 2 (PKM2). The HIF-1α agonist ML228 also inhibited the induction of macrophage to an M2 phenotype by EgCF in vitro. Our findings indicate that E. granulosus inhibits glycolysis by suppressing the expression of HIF-1α.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcus granulosus can manipulate its host's immune response to ensure its own survival. However, the effect of histone modifications on the regulation of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and downstream interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) production in response to the parasite is not fully understood. METHODS: We evaluated IL-1ß secretion through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and assessed reactive oxygen species levels using the dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate probe. Western blotting and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction were performed to examine the expression of NLRP3 and IL-1ß in mouse peritoneal macrophages and Tohoku Hospital Pediatrics-1 cells, a human macrophage cell line. The presence of trimethylated histone H3 lysine 27 (H3K27me3) modification on NLRP3 and IL-1ß promoters was studied by chromatin immunoprecipitation. RESULTS: Treatment with E. granulosus cyst fluid (EgCF) considerably reduced IL-1ß secretion in mouse and human macrophages, although reactive oxygen species production increased. EgCF also suppressed the expression of NLRP3 and IL-1ß. Mechanistically, EgCF prompted the enrichment of repressive H3K27me3 modification on the promoters of both NLRP3 and IL-1ß in macrophages. Notably, the presence of EgCF led to a significant reduction in the expression of the H3K27me3 demethylase KDM6B. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that EgCF inhibits KDM6B expression and H3K27me3 demethylation, resulting in the transcriptional inhibition of NLRP3 and IL-1ß. These results provide new insights into the immune evasion mechanisms of E. granulosus.

Streptomyces alfalfa strain 11F has inhibitory effects on many phytopathogenic fungi and improves the establishment and biomass yield of switchgrass. However, the antagonistic effects of strain 11F on Fusarium wilt of watermelon and its secondary metabolites that contribute to its biocontrol activity are poorly understood. We evaluated the antagonistic and growth-promoting effects of strain 11F and conducted a transcriptome analysis to identify the metabolites contributing to antifungal activity. Strain 11F had marked inhibitory effects on six fungal pathogens. The incidence of Fusarium wilt of watermelon seedlings was decreased by 46.02%, while watermelon seedling growth was promoted, as indicated by plant height (8.7%), fresh weight (23.1%), and dry weight (60.0%). Clean RNA-sequencing data were annotated with 7553 functional genes. The 2582 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) detected in the Control vs. Case 2 comparison were divided into 42 subcategories of the biological process, cellular component, and molecular function Gene Ontology categories. Seven hundred and forty functional genes (55.47% of the DEGs) were assigned to Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes metabolic pathways, reflecting the complexity of the strain 11F metabolic regulatory system. The expression level of the gene phzF, which encodes an enzyme essential for phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA) synthesis, was downregulated 3.7-fold between the 24 h and 48 h fermentation time points, suggesting that strain 11F can produce phenazine compounds. A phenazine compound from 11F was isolated and identified as phenazine-1-carboxamide (PCN), which contributed to the antagonistic activity against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum. PCA was speculated to be the synthetic precursor of PCN. The downregulation in phzF expression might be associated with the decrease in PCA accumulation and the increase in PCN synthesis in strain 11F from 24 to 48 h. Streptomyces alfalfae 11F protects watermelon seedlings from Fusarium wilt of watermelon and promotes seedling growth. The transcriptome analysis of strain 11F provides insights into the synthesis of PCN, which has antifungal activity against F. oxysporum f. sp. niveum of watermelon.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcus granulosus cyst fluid (EgCF) weakens macrophage inflammatory responses, thereby enabling the parasite to evade the immune system. However, the role of histone modification in this process remains to be explored. METHODS: The levels of IL-6, TNF-α, IL-10, H3K4me3, and KDM5B were detected using quantitative real-time PCR, ELISA, and Western blotting. The enrichment of H3K4me3 and KDM5B at the promoter of inflammatory factors was detected by chromatin immunoprecipitation. RESULTS: Based on EgCF-stimulated macrophage models, we found that EgCF significantly inhibited mRNA expression and protein secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α and upregulated mRNA expression of IL-10 under the influence of TLR4. EgCF lowered the level of H3K4me3 and promoted the transcription and protein stability of histone demethylase KDM5B. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis revealed that EgCF suppressed the enrichment of H3K4me3 modification at the promoters of TNF-α and IL-6 and downregulated their expression in macrophages. Additionally, the inhibition of KDM5B activity by CPI-455 weakened the anti-inflammatory effect of EgCF. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate a novel mechanism through which EgCF promotes KDM5B expression and inhibits the enrichment of H3K4me3 at the promoters of inflammatory cytokines to suppress the inflammatory response.

Being a broad-spectrum anticancer drug, doxorubicin is indispensable for clinical treatment. Unexpectedly, its cardiotoxic side effects have proven to be a formidable obstacle. Numerous studies are currently devoted to elucidating the pathological mechanisms underlying doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. Nrf2 has always played a crucial role in oxidative stress, but numerous studies have demonstrated that it also plays a vital part in pathological mechanisms like cell death and inflammation. Numerous studies on the pathological mechanisms associated with doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity demonstrate this. Several clinical drugs, natural and synthetic compounds, as well as small molecule RNAs have been demonstrated to prevent doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity by activating Nrf2. Consequently, this study emphasizes the introduction of Nrf2, discusses the role of Nrf2 in doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, and concludes with a summary of the therapeutic modalities targeting Nrf2 to ameliorate doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, highlighting the potential value of Nrf2 in doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: The development of asymmetric chick gonads involves separate developmental programs in the left and right gonads. In contrast to the left ovary developing into a fully functional reproductive organ, the right ovary undergoes gradual degeneration. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the the degeneration of the right ovary remain incompletely understood. In the present study, we investigated the histomorphological and transcriptomic changes in the right ovary of ducks and geese during the the embryonic stage up to post-hatching day 1. RESULT: Hematoxylin-eosin stainings revealed that the right ovary developed until embryonic day 20 in ducks (DE20) or embryonic day 22 in geese (GE22), after which it started to regress. Further RNA-seq analyses revealed that both the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in ducks and geese right ovary developmental stage were significantly enriched in cell adhesion-related pathway (ECM-receptor interaction, Focal adhesion pathway) and Cellular senescence pathway. Then during the degeneration stage, the DEGs were primarily enriched in pathways associated with inflammation, including Herpes simplex virus 1 infection, Influenza A, and Toll-like receptor signaling pathway. Moreover, duck-specific DEGs showed enrichment in Steroid hormone biosynthesis, Base excision repair, and the Wnt signaling pathway, while geese-specifically DEGs were found to be enriched in apoptosis and inflammation-related pathways, such as Ferroptosis, Necroptosis, RIG-I-like receptor signaling pathway, and NOD-like receptor signaling pathway. These findings suggest that the degeneration process of the right ovary in ducks occurs at a slower pace compared to that in geese. Additionally, the observation of the left ovary of the geese varying degeneration rates in the right ovary after hatching indicated that the development of the left ovary may be influenced by the degeneration of the right ovary. CONCLUSION: The data presented in this study provide valuable insights into the dynamic changes in histological structure and transcriptome during the degeneration of the right ovary in ducks and geese. In addition, through the analysis of shared characteristics in the degeneration process of the right ovary in both ducks and geese, we have uncovered the patterns of degradation and elucidated the molecular mechanisms involved in the regression of the right ovary in poultry. Furthermore, we have also made initial discoveries regarding the relationship between the degeneration of the right ovary and the development of the left ovary.

Coiled-coil domain-containing 85C (CCDC85C) is a member of the DIPA family and contains a pair of conserved coiled-coil motifs, which was found to be related to a therapeutic target for colorectal cancer, however, its biological effects require further elucidation. This study aimed to determine the effect of CCDC85C on Colorectal Cancer (CRC) progression and to explore the related mechanism. pLV-PURO plasmid was used to construct CCDC85C-overexpressing cells while CRISPR-CasRx was used to construct CCDC85C knockdown cells. Effects of CCDC85C on cell proliferation, cycle and migration were examined using cell counting kit-8 assay, flow cytometry, wound healing assay and transwell assay. Immunofluorescence staining, immunoprecipitation, Western blot, co-immunoprecipitation and qPCR were performed to explore the mechanism. The overexpression of CCDC85C inhibited the proliferation and migration of HCT-116 and RKO cells in vitro and in vivo, but its knockdown promoted the proliferation of HCT-116 and RKO cells in vitro. Moreover, co-immunoprecipitation experiment confirmed that CCDC85C binding with GSK-3ß in RKO cells. Excess CCDC85C promoted phosphorylation and ubiquitination of ß-catenin. Our results suggested that CCDC85C binds to GSK-3ß to promote its activity and facilitates ubiquitination of ß-catenin. ß-catenin degradation is responsible for the inhibitory effect of CCDC85C on CRC cell proliferation and migration.

Carbon sequestration is the primary function of biochar. Hence, it is necessary to design biochar with high carbon (C) retention and low C loss. In this study, three P compounds, including KH2PO4, Ca(H2PO4)2, and NH4H2PO4, were premixed with corn stalk (1:4, w/w), aiming to produce biochars (CSB+K, CSB+Ca, and CSB+N) with high C sequestration and slow release of P at three temperatures (300, 500, and 700 °C). The addition of all P sources obviously increased C retention, with the order of NH4H2PO4 (65.6-83.5%) > Ca(H2PO4)2 (60.4-78.2%) > KH2PO4 (50.1-76.1%), compared with the pristine biochar (47.8-73.6%). The addition of Ca(H2PO4)2 and KH2PO4 led to an increase in aromaticity and graphitization, as evidenced by H/C, FTIR, Raman and XPS analysis, whereas an opposite result occurred on CSB+N. Furthermore, all three phosphates reduced C loss of biochars with H2O2 oxidation, and CSB+Ca showed the best effect. Ca(H2PO4)2 and KH2PO4 pretreated biochars had higher resistance to K2Cr2O7 oxidation and thermal treatment. In contrast, the C loss of NH4H2PO4-added biochar at 500 and 700 °C with K2Cr2O7 oxidation was increased by 54% and 36%, respectively. During the pyrolysis process, Ca(H2PO4)2 was transformed into insoluble Ca2P2O7, leading to the lowest P release rate of CSB+Ca. This study indicates that co-pyrolysis of corn stalk and Ca(H2PO4)2 is optimal for increasing C retention, enhancing C stability and improving slow-release performance of P regardless of pyrolysis temperature.

Objective To investigate the effect of Echinococcus granulosus cyst fluid(EgCF) on the cytoskeletal rearrangement and phagocytosis and the migration of macrophages induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPS). Methods Peritoneal macrophages of C57BL/6 mice were isolated and cultured in vitro, and divided into control group and LPS group and LPS combined with EgCF group. After 48 hours of treatment, filamentous actin (F-actin) changes were observed with rhodamine-labelled phalloidin staining and fluorescence microscopy; TranswellTM chamber was used to test cell migration ability and flow cytometry to test cell phagocytosis. After 1 hour of treatment, PI3K and AKT, phosphorylated AKT (p-AKT), Rac1, guanosine triphospho-Rac1 (GTP-Rac1), WASP and Arp2 protein expressions were detected with Western blot analysis. Results Compared with the control group, after LPS stimulation, macrophages were deformed significantly; pseudopodia increased; actin cytoskeleton increased and was more distributed in pseudopodia; the ability of migration and phagocytosis were significantly improved, and the expression of PI3K, p-AKT, GTP-Rac1, WASP and Arp2 proteins significantly increased. EgCF treatment caused cell shrinkage and disappearance of pseudopodia protrusions of LPS-activated cells, and led to the reduced phagocytic and migratory of cells; the protein expression of PI3K, p-AKT, GTP-Rac1, WASP and Arp2 decreased significantly compared with the LPS group. Conclusion LPS induces the migration and enhances phagocytosis of macrophages while EgCF inhibits these effects, which is related to actin cytoskeleton rearrangement.

The prevalence of depression in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients is very high, and it severely impacts the prognosis and quality of life of these patients. Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, a new type of oral hypoglycemic drugs, have been shown to alleviate depressive symptoms in DM patients; however, the mechanism underlying this effect is not well understood. The lateral habenula (LHb) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of depression expresses SGLT2, suggesting that the LHb may mediate antidepressant effects of SGLT2 inhibitors. The current study aimed to investigate the involvement of the LHb in the antidepressant effects of the SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin. Chemogenetic methods were used to manipulate the activity of LHb neurons. Behavioral tests, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and neurotransmitter assays were used to determine the effects of dapagliflozin on the behavior of DM rats, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and c-Fos expression in the LHb and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA)/5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) ratio in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). We found that DM rats demonstrated depressive-like behavior, increased c-Fos expression, and decreased AMPK pathway activity in the LHb. Inhibition of LHb neurons alleviated the depressive-like behavior of DM rats. Both systemic and local LHb administration of dapagliflozin alleviated the depressive-like behavior and reversed the changes of the AMPK pathway and c-Fos expression in the LHb of DM rats. Dapagliflozin, when microinjected into the LHb, also increased 5-HIAA /5-HT in the DRN. These results suggest that dapagliflozin directly acts on the LHb to alleviate DM-induced depressive-like behavior and that the underlying mechanism involves activating the AMPK signaling pathway, leading to the inhibition of LHb neuronal activity, which in turn increases serotonergic activity in the DRN. These results will help develop new strategies for the treatment of DM-induced depression.

RESUMEN

A 49-year-old man was referred to the hospital with the complaints of haematochezia and weight loss. Colonoscopy and pathological needle biopsy suggested moderately to highly differentiated adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent abdominal CT examination, which demonstrated two augmented and irregular masses in the liver. However, the glucose metabolism of 18F-FDG in these two lesions was completely different. Considering the different glucose metabolism, a needle biopsy of the liver mass was performed, and the diagnosis was rectal cancer with liver metastasis and primary hepatocellular carcinoma.

AIM: To evaluate the mid-term clinical efficacy of microwave in situ inactivation combined with bone grafting or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) filling in the treatment of giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB). METHODS: This is a retrospective, descriptive, and analytical study. A total of 30 GCTB patients received microwave in situ inactivation from January 2012 to January 2020, whose clinical recurrence rate was evaluated at the last follow-up after microwave in situ inactivation surgery. The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) function score was used to evaluate the postoperative clinical panoramic results. RESULTS: All patients were followed up for 21 to 110 months, with an average of 63.79 months. Distal femur (40%) and proximal tibia (28%) had a higher rate of GCTB incidence. Seventeen percent of tumor patients suffered from associated pathologic fracture. The rate of Campanacci classification stage III was 60%. The average MSTS score was evaluated as 27.53 points overall at the last follow-up. In terms of complications, three, two, two and one cases developed fat liquefaction, controllable tissue rejection reaction, incision infection and degenerative changes around lesion joint, respectively, without in situ recurrences and reoperation as well as distant lung metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: The method of microwave in situ inactivation combined with bone grafting or PMMA filling is prudently recommended as one of the options for the limb salvage treatment of giant cell tumor of long and periarticular bone. tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) are a class of small RNAs that occur when tRNAs are broken down by enzymes due to stress. Increasing reports have shown that tRFs are associated with multiple physiological and pathological processes, especially in cancers; however, very little is known of the effects and mechanisms of tRFs. Therefore, further investigation on the biological roles and clinical value of tRFs is required. In this study, we utilized whole-transcriptome sequencing to profile tRFs expression in the tissues and plasma exosomes of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Three tRFs (tRF-3022b, tRF-3030b and tRF-5008b) showed an increasing trend in CRC tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues. They also tended to be elevated in plasma exosomes of CRC patients compared to healthy controls. These results indicated that they may be upregulated in cancer cells and then secreted by exosomes. The knockdown of tRF-regulated factors such as AlkB homolog 3 (ALKBH3), tRNA aspartic acid methyltransferase 1 (DNMT2), angiogenin (ANG), and argonaute RISC catalytic component 2 (AGO2) could affect the expression of tRFs. Notably, we found that the decrease in the three tRFs arrests the progression of the CRC cell cycle and induces cell apoptosis. Silencing tRF-3022b could facilitate M2 macrophage polarization. Mechanistically, we found that tRF-3022b binds to galectin 1 (LGALS1) and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in CRC cells and reduces polarization by regulating MIF in M2 macrophages. In conclusion, our study revealed the expression pattern of tRFs in both tissue and plasma exosomes and identified a novel tRF, tRF-3022b, which may affect CRC tumor growth and M2 macrophage polarization by binding to LGALS1 and MIF.

Background: Proximal gastrectomy has gradually gained more attention due to its superiority in retaining the function of part of the stomach. The inevitable loss of the antireflux barrier and postoperative complications resulting from proximal gastrectomy can severely affect the quality of life. Continuous improvements in digestive tract reconstruction after proximal gastrectomy have yielded the development of a variety of methods with antireflux functions. Recently, our center attempted the left-open single-flap technique and initiated a multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled trial for patients undergoing proximal gastrectomy to reduce the difficulty of surgical anastomosis and the incidence of perioperative complications compared with the double-flap technique. These findings will provide more evidence-based medical research for the development of clinical guidelines. Methods/design: This study is a prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled clinical trial. We plan to recruit 250 patients who are eligible for proximal gastrectomy. After informed consent is obtained, patients will be randomly assigned to the trial group (left-open single-flap technique) and the control group (double-flap technique) in a 1:1 allocation ratio. Discussion: Increasingly, clinical studies have focused on the improvement of reconstruction modalities after proximal gastrectomy. Among these methods, the double-flap technique is a clinically effective method. The purpose of this study is to establish a prospective randomized controlled trial to compare the efficacy of the left-open single-flap technique versus the double-flap technique after proximal gastrectomy, aiming to provide more evidence-based medical studies for digestive tract reconstruction in proximal gastrectomy. The long-standing pathogen prevalence hypothesis suggests that collectivism can protect from epidemics and pandemics in terms of psychological well-being. However, studies exploring the protective mechanism induced when collectivism meets cultural tightness (the strength of social norms and tolerance for deviant behavior) are few. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the protective effect of collectivism in detail considering loose and tight cultural contexts. The sample comprised 2001 Chinese participants (M age = 18.41 ± 2.388 years; 50.2% female). Moderated regression analyses indicated that more perceived risk of COVID-19 predicted severe mental health responses (i.e., depression and anxiety), collectivism moderated this positive relationship but individualism did not. Notably, the protective effect of collectivism is especially evident in tight cultures but ineffective in loose cultures. This study emphasized that the protective effects of collectivism on mental health during a pandemic should be considered within the framework of cultural tightness. This study's findings may advance knowledge about the relationship between cultural type and mental health during epidemics.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence indicates that the outbreak of COVID-19 has had a significant influence on individuals' cognition, emotion, and psychological health. This study aims to explore the effect of the association between time perspectives and self-control on the well-being and ill-being among college students in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted an online survey involving 1,924 participants in mainland China during the outbreak of COVID-19. A series of self-rating questionnaires measuring the perceived impact of COVID-19, time perspectives, self-control, as well as the statuses of well-being and ill-being were administered. Multiple indirect effects of time perspectives and self-control on well-being and ill-being were analysed through structural equation modelling. RESULTS: The present-hedonistic time perspective (an orientation on immediate impulses of pleasure) meditated the effects of perceived impacts on both well-being and ill-being, and the future time perspective (considering the outcomes of actions and decisions) mediated the effects on well-being. Moreover, the mediating effects were further mediated by self-control. Specifically, the impact of the future time perspective on ill-being was fully mediated by self-control (ß = 0.01, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Based on the results, it is evident that the present-hedonistic time perspective, the future time perspective, and self-control are related to higher levels of well-being and lower levels of ill-being, thereby providing further insight into the theoretical framework of time perspectives during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, our findings provide practical implications for psychological interventions during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the effects of time perspectives and self-control on the well-being and ill-being of different individuals.
